Write your own volunteering job description
At LWC, we downplay use of job titles and instead favor having people thoroughly describe the work they'd like to do. Similarly, in creating volunteer opportunities, we favor minimally constraining job titles. We ask you as a prospective volunteer to describe how you'd like to address a need that might have a lighthearted or even peculiar position title.
Sample volunteer needs:
"UOK?"
We want to stay in touch with participants who miss a session or two. How would you ask, in effect, "Are you OK?" in a friendly and supportive e-mail or phone call to someone who didn't attend this week's group? What would you say after the second absence in a row? the third?
"Huck Sawyer"
Remember Tom Sawyer and the fence that needed whitewashing? Well, not just any life's worker can do such a task, no siree. At LWC, even filling up the FileMaker databases cries out for flair and fun. To see if you've got what it takes, enjoy the Huck Sawyer story .
