From Calamity to Calling

Finding More Than a Job at the Life’s Work Center

San Francisco, October 1—“I had no warning that my life was going to turn into a calamity,” says Tom Finnegan, executive director of the nonprofit Life’s Work Center in San Francisco. When his career took a nose dive fifteen years ago, Finnegan lost everything: income, house, and savings.

What with outsourcing, downsizing, and mergers, this story is not uncommon, but his rebound and resulting mission are quite unusual in today’s world of work.

“Many people are losing their jobs, and many more are unhappy with their work,” he says. “They don’t want just another job, but meaningful work that matches their values and skills, and pays them appropriately.”

After intensive training with Richard Bolles, author of What Color Is Your Parachute?, Finnegan found his life’s work. “My career transition was rocky,” he says. “It was plenty scary to be in the cycle of loss. Through my rebuilding process, I learned I wanted to help others discover their passion and live their life’s work—more than just a job—but to have a softer landing than mine.”

He started the Life’s Work Center (LWC) in 2000 to support people from the inside out in defining and finding fulfilling work. “Participants include those who are in ‘successful’ careers with jobs and good pay that others admire, but they are wondering, ‘Is this all there is?’” he says.

LWC programs go beyond Parachute with numerous innovative exercises developed specifically for LWC participants seeking more than just a job.

“One exercise that really gets people thinking,” Finnegan says, “is to hand them a check for $5 million and then explore what they’ll do now that money is no object. Often they’ve never seriously considered what they really want to be doing in their lives. This may be their first step in an incredible journey to a gratifying new life.”

LWC offers ongoing counseling groups and a cycle of eight-week intensive counseling groups, at 109 Bartlett Street, San Francisco. The next intensive group begins in October 2008. For more information, contact LWC.

NOTE: The executive director is available for interviews.
